A Community Association for the University District
A Community Association for the University District

a path to connection and belonging:

At the core of every vibrant neighbourhood is a strong sense of community. The proposed University District Community Association aims to cultivate an environment where diverse residents feel connected, respected and engaged. Through our proposed mission statement, we focus on fostering community engagement that prioritizes a people-first approach.

Why Community Engagement Matters

WHY DO WE NEED A COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION:  We have a University District Neighbourhood Association (UDNA) that was established by the University of Calgary developer (UCPG) in 2024. For each square foot of living space at the University District, the UDNA collects $0.07 cents.
UNDA's mandate is to maintain and operate community common areas including parks, pathways, landscaping and amenities at the University District. There is no community representation on the UDNA board. According to the UDNA, decisions regarding resident-focused programming will be made by the UDNA following turnover to the community. Community members are not expected to be included on the board until possibly 2040, according to the UDNA.

The goal in establishing a University District Community Association (UDCA) is to give residents of the University District a voice in the development of our community and in the programs, services and activities available to us.

DIVERSE PERSPECTIVES: Our community is rich with individuals from various backgrounds. Engaging respectfully with one another allows us to learn from each other’s experiences.

SHARED RESPONSIBILITY: Active involvement fosters a sense of ownership and responsibility among residents, leading to a shared commitment to improving the neighbourhood.

Community Programs and Events

Here are several proposed key program ideas and events that could enhance our community engagement:

SOCIAL EVENTS
MEET - UPS: Showcasing and sharing talents, music and special interests such as book readings and clubs brings families together and encourages neighbours to meet one another.
CULTURAL EVENTS: Celebrating the diverse cultures in our community allows residents to share their traditions and build mutual respect.
TEACHING & LEARNING: Share knowledge and experience about everything from travel to finances

RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES
SPORT - GAME: Organizing community sport and game activities (e.g.: billiards, pool, ping pong, chess) can foster teamwork and promote healthy living.
YOGA IN THE PARK: Offering free yoga sessions in local parks creates a relaxed atmosphere for residents to unwind and connect.
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES: Engaging residents through volunteer work helps build a stronger, more united community. Activities like neighbourhood clean-ups or food drives not only improve our surroundings but also encourage teamwork and collaboration.

Fostering a Sense of Belonging

Creating a welcoming atmosphere involves thoughtful consideration of every community member's needs:

Inclusive Planning: Invite input from diverse groups when planning community events to ensure everyone feels included.

Support Local Voices: Highlight local artists, businesses, and community leaders through events or newsletters to celebrate our unique identity.

Effective Communication: Utilize various platforms, including social media, newsletters, and community boards to share information and updates on events.

Conclusion

Building a sense of community in the University District through the establishment of a Community Association is a shared responsibility. By prioritizing thoughtful engagement, cooperative activities, and cultural diversity, we can foster strong connections that enrich lives and create a welcoming atmosphere for all. Let’s unite to strengthen our community and embrace the diverse tapestry that makes the University District truly special.
